What the score is actually built from

Gazole doesn't score drivers on raw sensor data from a black box in the vehicle. The score is built from things that actually happened, that the driver was part of:

  • Trips completed. A driver reliably finishing the jobs assigned to them counts in their favour — this is the core of the job, and the score reflects it.
  • Proof-of-delivery compliance. Missed or incomplete PODs count against the score, because a delivery that can't be verified is a real operational and cash-flow problem, not a technicality.
  • Recorded incidents. HSSE incidents logged against a driver's trips weigh into the score — safety events matter more than any other single factor.

That's it. No accelerometer data, no harsh-braking events scored from a device the driver never agreed to have judged by, no penalty for things outside their control. The score is a reflection of trips run, deliveries proven, and safety record — the same things a good manager would actually evaluate a driver on.

Why this matters more than it sounds like it should

It's explainable. A driver who sees their score can also see exactly what moved it: a completed trip, a captured POD, an incident. There's no mystery to argue with, which means there's something concrete to improve.

It's fair to circumstances outside a driver's control. A score built from trips, PODs, and incidents doesn't penalise a driver for another road user's mistake, bad weather, or a mechanical fault — the way raw sensor-based scoring often does when it can't distinguish "reckless" from "reacting to someone else."

It rewards the actual job, not just the absence of infractions. Completing trips reliably counts toward the score, not just avoiding penalties — so a driver with a strong, consistent record is recognised for it, not just left alone.

What a driver-first approach looks like in practice

Give drivers visibility into their own score. A driver who can see their score, its trend, and what specifically moved it can act on it directly — there's no black box to be suspicious of.

Use the record as protection, not just measurement. A completed POD and a logged incident report protect a driver from being blamed for a delivery dispute or an incident that wasn't their fault, because the evidence already exists in the system.

Make the tools useful day to day, not just observational. Trip logging and POD capture are things a driver uses to do their job — not a passive tracker running in the background that only surfaces when something goes wrong.

The business case holds up either way

Even setting the trust question aside, this scoring approach gives fleet managers something genuinely useful: a live signal for reliability (trips completed), documentation quality (POD compliance), and safety (incidents) — the three things that actually predict whether a driver is a strong operational asset or a growing risk. That's a more actionable signal than a raw telematics score most fleet managers never fully trust or act on anyway.
